Going Underground

Filed under: house — Kathy @ 6:04 pm

The builders actually started in June. The first task was “the big wall,” an underground retaining wall made of reinforced concrete that extends 20 feet below the natural grade of the land. This is what you have to do when you buy a building lot on a sandy, silty hillside and decide to perch your future house so far out on the hill that walking out the back door requires a safety net.

This is the big hole for the big wall, looking south.

Here is the big wall itself, looking northeast this time.

Finally, who doesn’t like to get something really big and expensive and then bury it in the sand forever? Not me!
